Gose

Style Snapshot

This unique wheat ale is dark straw to light amber in color, medium-bodied, moderately strong, and has a distinctively dry, slightly astrigent finish.

Gose is one of several wheat ales with a lactic character to its fermentation. Berliner Weisse and Gueuze are similar in this regard.

History

Both the name and slightly salty finish of this beer style comes from the water of the river Gose which runs through the town of Goslar. It is from here that this style was born in and around the 10th century. In the 1700's, as Leipzig rose in prominence relative to Goslar, the making of Gose shifted to this city as well.
