Düsseldorf-Style Altbier

Style Snapshot

This flavorful and crisp ale is pale to dark amber in color, is light to medium in body, is moderate in alcohol content, and may be highly hopped to offset its Pils or Munich malt base.

Düsseldorf-Style Altbier is more highly hopped and darker in color than Münster-Style Altbier, and contains less wheat in the grain bill.

History

Altbier in German literally means 'old beer', as in an old-style of brewing. The origin of this style of beer predates the isolation of bottom-fermenting lager yeast strains. However, the brewing process results in a product that mimics many characteristics of lager beers.
