Comparing Beer Styles
Each beer style has distinctive characteristics, and many of these can be measured. Homebrewers use these to design recipes that either mimic a favorite or create a new expression. Use our interactive charts to compare beer styles for gravity, strength, color, or bitterness. You can click on a style name to learn more.
When comparing styles, note the great range in characteristics for both ales and lagers. Ales have existed many hundreds of years longer than lagers, and exhibit great variety. Lagers are newer, less than 200 years that is, and there is more similarity found around the world. The comforting thing is that there's a beer style out there for everybody, including you.
