Beer 101: Origins of Beer Styles
Beer style is timeless, but diverse. A brewer’s intent, available ingredients, brewing techniques and equipment, local conditions, and cultural tastes all contribute to a particular brew’s strength, appearance, aroma and flavor - its je ne sais quoi, if you will. You don’t always want to reinvent the wheel, so using history’s lessons on what combinations of factors produce what kinds of results allows brewers to create consistent beers. However, established beer styles can also serve as points of departure, base notes from which a homebrewer can riff when centuries-old recipes start to feel a bit played-out.
