Alcohol by Volume

Alcohol by volume is a measure of the amount of alcohol in a beer. It is computed as the amount of space the alcohol in a beer occupies as a percentage of the total fluid volume.

This measure of a beer’s strength is approximately 20 percent more than alcohol by weight.

It is represented by the acronym ABV.
