Homebrew Bitterness Units

Homebrew Bitterness Units are a measure of the total amount of bitterness potential in a given volume of beer. It is named for and used by homebrewers, who typically lack the sophisticated equipment required to measure International Bitterness Units (IBU's).

They are calculated by multiplying the alpha acid content of the selected hop type by the number of ounces of hop being used, and then adjusting for the volume of beer being made. This measure is not related to IBU's, however, both attempt to quantify the same characteristic.

It is frequently abbreviated as HBU.
