Tasting Beer: Aroma

The aroma released by the pour does not last long, but should be an appealing overture to the tasting of the beer. Hold the glass closer, swirl the beer in the glass to release the aromas, and take a whiff - um, take in the experience. The bouquet of the hops should be present as appropriate for the style. Take note of the aromas presented by the grains used. Beers with a significant malt character may have roasted or caramel-like smells. Be on alert for aromas that the yeast may provide, especially in ales, which can have a robust, fruity presence.
