Stirring Paddles

What it does :

This is an essential tool used to stir the mash or the wort. Traditional examples were made of wood, which is still used today. Plastic is now also used.

What it is:

A stirring paddle, or mashing fork, is a long handled implement intended for mixing.

How it works:

This is a classic item associated with the brewing profession, and can be seen in many beer-related logos. Those used by homebrewers are much smaller than those used by professionals.

Preparation:

Stirring paddles are used during the hot side of brewing e.g. wort preparation). They should be cleaned before use, as you would anything used to prepare food. The boiling of the wort should protect it from any contamination resulting from contact with the paddle.
