Cleaning Solutions

What it does :

Bacteria are the great enemy of the brewer. Everything that comes in contact with the ingredients should be cleaned, and everything that contacts the cooled wort should be sanitized.

What it is:

Cleaning solution, also called sanitizer when in powder form, kills unwanted germs and other microbes.

How it works:

One popular powder sanitizer, when mixed with warm water, forms a solution that causes a chemical reaction that kills harmful bacteria. You use this solution to soak items needing sanitization. Happily for homebrewers, the by-products of this reaction then decay to substances commonly found in water.

Preparation:

Cleaning solution or sanitizer powder is used in support of the cold side of brewing (e.g. fermentation, bottling, and packaging). One popular product requires 1 tablespoon (15 milliliters) per gallon of warm water. Consult the directions with your cleaner for the proper amount to use per volume of water.
