Grain Mills

What it does :

Cracking the grains helps make the starches inside the husk more accessible to the hot water that you add in the mash and lauter tuns.

What it is:

A grain mill is a device used to crack open the husks of grains to prepare them for mashing.

How it works:

Simply dump your grains into a mini-hopper, and the grains are conveyed inside while you manually crank the handle. The amount of crushing from the grain mill can be adjusted, but you may have to calibrate with your particular model.

Preparation:

Grain mills are used in preparation for the hot side of brewing (e.g. wort preparation). Therefore, they should be cleaned before use, as you would anything used to prepare food. Boiling the wort should protect it from contamination resulting from contact with the grain mill.
